We had a lovely afternoon of tennis and none of which was thwarted by the weather because for the first time we held it indoors! All of us were in for a real treat because the Year 3 and 4s that came played some of the best tennis I have seen in quite a while! One of the leaders said to me “I’ve just watch two boys play a rally that lasted for over eight shots, they were brilliant, much better than me!”
After an hour and half and 12 hard fought matches, we finally we had our winning school…congratulations Silverstone Primary! They were very worthy winners and will progress to the next round due to be held in June, so time to practice!!Our wonderful leaders we also given the task to award one player the trophy for “Sportsmanship”.
A huge well done and congratulations to all of the musicians who took part in the Proms concert at Whittlebury Hall on Sunday 3rd February. The concert involved 110 musicians in all including the Sponne Concert Band, Brass Band, Jazz Orchestra, Senior Choir and visiting championship section brass band from Oxfordshire, Kidlington Concert Brass. The groups played to a packed capacity audience of over 350 people. Each group played some of their own repertoire as well as playing together as a massed band. The event showcased many talented soloists including: Lucy Wood who gave a rendition of the cornet solo 'Buster Strikes Back' . Ellie Taylor, Lucy Underwood and Sam Tollervey all performed a trombone trio with their counterpart section from Kidlington Concert Brass. A comical arrangement of 'Mr Sandman' featuring Jake Rees, Oscar Williams, Ross Baker and Tom Barker on handbells and tubular bells had many of the audience members chuckling! The evening concluded with the traditional last night of the Proms music: Fantasia on British Sea songs by Henry Wood with audience participation led by Tom Perks. Felicity Holmes led the singing of Jerusalem and Land of Hope and Glory.
After winning the Year 7 Girls District Basketball Tournament our team were looking forward to their next challenge. We travelled to Lings Forum on Tuesday 15th Jan to compete in the County Final.
Sponne’s first game was against Wollaston Secondary School and was our first convincing win of the day with a score line of 27-4 to Sponne. Next up was Prince William School, again we took an early lead with superb shoots from CA and PB, but after a small come back from the Oundle based School, Sponne continued to impress and finish strong, final score was 18-9 to Sponne. Our final game of the day was predicted to be a much tougher game; we were up against the reigning champions from the last 5 years, Northampton School for Girls. The girls once again took an early lead in quarter 1 only to have NSG come back during quarter 2 and 3; we started the final quarter at 12-12. Sponne’s team really pulled together and demonstrated how their grit and determination had got them so far and sored to a 20-16 victory.
County Champions and off to Regionals!! Watch this space.
Congratulations Girls
On Tuesday 15 th January, Sponne took part in the Year 7 District Sportshall Athletics Championships held at Parker Eact School in Daventry. For many of the athletes, this was their first experience of athletics and they did themselves proud with both girls and boys finishing in second position and hence qualifying for the County Championships in March.
For the boys the star performer was JA with outstanding performances both on the track and on the field. Sponne had two individual victories in the girls event with PB winning the 4 lap race and CA winning the shot. Congratulations to all those that took part.

After winning the County round of the English Schools Cup, Sponne’s Inter girls (Yr9 and 10) team took part in the regional round of the competition against the eleven other qualifying schools from an eight County area.
The competition was understandably extremely challenging but the girls did themselves proud. The race started at a frenetic pace with E H in the second group behind a small leading pack. E H held this position throughout and eventually finished in an outstanding 7th position. The second counter for Sponne was A H, who produced her best ever run, to finish in 9th position after a strong second lap. The team was completed by G C, E H and J P, all of whom ran well against high level opposition.
The team finished in 4th position overall – the best ever performance by a team from Sponne – a huge well done to all!
