Adaptive Teaching Session 2

Facilitated by James Rawbone

Suitable for all teaching staff.

Focus:

Adaptive teaching is an important aspect of high-quality teaching.

The term has emerged to describe how teachers adapt the support they give to pupils, each with different starting points and learning needs, so they can work towards the same learning goals of a lesson.

Aims

Session 1
What is adaptive teaching?
Moving from differentiation to adaptive teaching
Scaffolding
Formative assessment and Feedback

Session 2
Supporting colleagues with approaches to adaptive teaching
Impact of cognitive load theory
Using mechanisms to support teacher development
Evaluating the impact of professional development
Building the right culture - mastery, rather than performance

Outcomes

Session 1 equips teachers to shift from traditional differentiation to responsive adaptive teaching by using practical scaffolding and real-time formative assessment to keep expectations high for all pupils.

Session 2 empowers educators to lead this practice across their school by applying cognitive load theory, supporting colleagues through effective professional development, and fostering a school-wide culture of mastery over performance.
