Music Events

Whittlebury Hall Proms – Sunday 5th February – 7pm

Following on from the tremendously successful collaborative proms event with Rotary, we will be doing this again this year! There will be a rehearsal from 3 – 5pm in the afternoon. The Concert Band, Brass Band, Senior Choir and Jazz Orchestra will be involved in this event. This will be a major fundraising event for both Sponne (tour fund 2018) and Rotary (supporting local charities). Reduced price tickets will go on sale online after half term and will be available until the end of the Christmas holidays. After this point full price tickets will need to be purchased directly from the Rotary website.

December 2016

Year 7 students attended our annual Christmas Carol Concert at St Lawrence Church on Wednesday 14th December 2016. Music was courtesy of Sponne Concert Band who were joined by our Senior Choir in delivering an excellent array of Christmas Carols which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended.

November 2016

Our 9th Annual Autumn Jazz Cafétook place on the evening of 9th November. The Jazz Café is a pleasant, relaxed evening where the students perform, the audience sit around tables and the PFA very kindly run a bar and a raffle. The evening included performances by all of our jazz groups and our jazz orchestra. Jazz groups represented year groups 8, 9, 10, 11 and year 12 where as the jazz orchestra includes members of all year groups. All students performed well but a particular feature this year was several compositions by group members as well as well known jazz standards. Well done to all our jazz musicians.

July 2016

Band Tour to Belgium
During the last week of the academic year 2016, over 50 musicians from the Sponne Jazz Orchestra, Brass Band, Concert Band and String Orchestra went on tour to Belgium. The base for the tour was the beautiful town of Bruges Following a 2am departure from Sponne, the first day was spent in the Bellewaerde theme park enjoying the thrills of the rides on offer. The following days involved three concerts in De Panne, Ostend and Ypres. The band also did an excursion to the Tyne Cot CWGC Cemetery, Canal cruise in Bruges and visit to In Flanders Fields Museum, Ypres. The band performed in the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres.

March / April 2016

It has been a very busy term for musicians. On Saturday 19thMarch, the Brass band, Jazz Orchestra, String Orchestra, String Octet and Sponnaissance participated in the regional qualifying round for the National Festival of Music for Youth held at Cripps Hall.

On Tuesday 22ndMarch all of the Sponne music groups performed in the Spring concert to a full house. Once again the groups performed to a fantastic standard and were well received by the audience. Groups included Orchestra (Yrs7-9), Concert Band, Brass Band, Strings, Senior choir, Junior Choir, Senior Percussion, Junior Percussion, Jazz Orchestra, Sponnaissance and Jazz groups (Yrs. 9-10).

Well done to some of our jazz musicians for taking part inthe Northampton School for Girls’ Jazz Café on Wednesday 20th April. This was a real celebration of jazz talent from across schools in Northamptonshire and beyond and was held in the Spinney Theatre. The event closed with a performance from the “Community Big Band” made up of staff band leaders, ex-students and peripatetic staff. Concluding with a set from Tom Barford’s Jazz Quartet.

February 2016

A huge well done and congratulations to all of the musicians who took part in the Proms concert at Whittlebury Hall on 7th February.

The concert involved 110 musicians in all including the Sponne Concert Band, Brass Band, Jazz Orchestra, Senior Choir and visiting championship section brass band from Oxfordshire, Kidlington Concert Brass. The groups played to a packed capacity audience of 450 people. Each group played some of their own repertoire as well as playing together as a massed band. The event showcased many talented soloists including:

Ben Johnson and Peter Osborne in a xylophone duet and Suzi Humphrey, Sarah Williams, Ellie Taylor and Archie Milan in a trombone feature. The evening concluded with the traditional last night of the Proms music: Fantasia on British Sea songs by Henry Wood with audience participation led by Harry Mason. Sam Milan, Suzi Clarke and Felicity Holmes led the singing of Jerusalem and Caroline Watkins with Land of Hope and Glory during which there was much flag waving. The evening has raised a considerable sum of money for Sponne and also the Towcester Rotary Club for charitable causes.Roy Bricknall from the Rotary Club said “It was a super evening, a great performance and once again you showed what great musical talent you have at Sponne”.

December 2015

On Tuesday 15th December over 180 musicians from Sponne performed to a full house in the Christmas Concert. This rounded off a very busy term for musicians who have been performing at various local Christmas events including the Civic Carol Service, Probus Christmas Lunch, Towcester Farmers Market and Yr 7 Carol Service. The evening provided a feast of music featuring the Brass Band, the Junior Orchestra, String Orchestra, Jazz orchestra, percussion ensembles, a selection of jazz ensembles, folk group, junior and senior choir. Thanks to all our wonderful musicians for being such fantastic ambassadors for Sponne School. Their next performance will be at the Rotary Last Night of the Proms event at Whittlebury Hall on February 7th

October 2015

We held our 8th annual Jazz Cafe on the evening of 21st October. It was a successful evening and allowed students in all years to improvise as jazz soloists.

The evening included a vocal contribution from Dan Smith. Sponne Jazz Orchestra performed several pieces including those performed at the National Festival of Music for Youth back in July. It was also an opportunity to feature new band members and those moved into new roles this term. Vocal items with the jazz orchestra featured Caroline Watkins and Harry Mason along with instrumental solos by many members of the orchestra.
